Australian International Education Review and Private Colleges A REVIEW of international education yesterday called for an overdue regulatory crackdown on dodgy private colleges that are no more than money-driven "permanent residency factories". The Baird review's recommendations include a greater focus on financial penalties and more protection for international students. But there are concerns the focus should not be on the tightening of regulations so much as the enforcement of regulations.

The Federal Government has unveiled plans for a new website rating Australia's universities, based on the My School site launched last month. Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard says students choosing a university need more reliable information and the website will lead to better education standards across the country. The site will publish information on student performance, and list the courses and facilities available at each campus.

The Silent Agony of the Foreign Student. While it treats them like cash cows, our education system puts many foreign students through profound and devastating isolation. This is the situation: over the past 10 years the number of international students studying in Australia has more than doubled.

From 1 January 2010 applicants who studied in Australia a bachelor degree and who are applying for skills assessment by VETASSESS must demonstrate that they worked in their occupation for one year in a full time position AFTER graduation of the course, before they are able to apply for their permanent residence (PR) visa. After graduation students will have to apply for a visa subclass 485 (Skilled graduate temporary visa) which entitle up to 18 months of full time work. On this visa students must complete at least 12 months of full time work in their occupation. The new program is called “Job Ready Program” and this allows participants more time to gain valuable experience in an Australian workplace. Once this is achieved, students are able to apply for their PR.

(MIGRANTS) LOST IN THE QUEUE by Peter Mares on PomsinOz Migration Forum.  This is a newspaper article that appeared in The Age, on 18th December, a Melbourne Newspaper.  Another great article by Peter Mares I think you will agree, the man is getting prospective migrants lost in limbo.

Australia Ranks No. 2 in 2010 according to "International Living".  Australia is famous for its large beaches and temperate climate. Across the continent, Aussies and those who've chosen to emigrate there have access to an active and healthy lifestyle. But urban dwellers will find plenty of great culture and excellent food in Sydney and Melbourne, and a cost of living below that of some of the world's other great cities..... if you plan to stay, you'll find that few English-speaking countries with quality health care and good infrastructure will benefit as much as Australia from the economic booms in Asia and China

From 1 January 2010, prospective overseas students will need to demonstrate that they have access to at least $18 000 a year to fund their living costs in Australia, instead of the current $12 000. The new figure better reflects student costs in Australia and is consistent with information published for international students in Australian Education International’s (the international arm of DEEWR) 'Study in Australia' guide.

A re-emergence of a skills shortage is expected within 12 months despite business doing all it can to hold on to staff during the economic downturn, a survey finds. The Australian Industry Group (Ai Group) and consultant Deloitte warn that the skills shortage will re-emerge when trading conditions improve because of a drop in training and number of apprentices.
